An Overview of Nose Surgery

The nose is the central feature of the face and the face looks good if the nose is in proportion with other facial elements. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose job, is a common procedure with both men and women. A simple procedure like smoothing out a bump on the nose can in fact entirely change the appearance of the face.

Some people seek rhinoplasty surgery after their nose has been broken. Others may have been born with a birth defect or suffer from breathing problems. And there are also people who just want to change their appearance thus increasing their self-confidence. Only an experienced surgeon can choose the right nose size and shape, making it smaller, narrower or straighter, of course taking into account the client’s desires.

The rhinoplasty procedure is relatively simple but involves a lot of experience and expertise, so if someone considers rhinoplasty surgery he/she should find a surgeon who is well established and has performed lots of other nose jobs and can explain the procedure and risks associated with the surgery.

Nose surgery can be carried out using open or closed techniques. The open technique involves reaching the nasal bones by making incisions within the nostril and through the columella. This technique is used for the most complex cases.

The closed technique is the most commonly used method for a nose surgery as it leaves no visible scars. The nasal bones are reached through incisions within the nostrils and the skin is then separated from the bones and cartilage. Surgeons are unable to see inside the nose while they are performing the closed rhinoplasty procedure, thus it is important to choose one who is skilled at his work.

Depending on the type of procedure to be carried out and amount of work involved, the patient will be given a local or general anaesthetic and the full procedure can take one or two hours.

After the procedure is done the nose and eyes will be bruised and swollen. It will take a couple of weeks for bruising to recede. Patients will be required to take some time off from their job in order to take it easy and give time for the nose to heal. They should not engage in any physical activities for a while until the nose is healed and the pain subsides. The pain, swelling and bruising can last for a few months along with numbness and the feeling of a stuffy nose. It may take about a year for results of rhinoplasty to reach the final form.

One Response to “An Overview of Nose Surgery”

  1. [...] This technology allows the plastic surgeon and the patient to reach a mutual understanding of goals and expectations. However, it is important to realize that imaging, no matter how realistic and reasonable it is, is for simulation only and the final results may vary from the simulation.  No reputable Los Angeles rhinoplasty surgeon will ever guarantee a specific result. Computer imaging simply ensures that you and your surgeon share a common surgical goal and helps to establish the ideal aesthetic outcome. For example, a patient who has a moderately enlarged nose but a small chin, with the help of imaging, may find that what he/she actually desires is a conservative rhinoplasty and chin augmentation for facial balance rather than an intensive reduction rhinoplasty.
