Revision Rhinoplasty

While most rhinoplasty patients are extremely happy with their results, a small percentage of patients pursue revision rhinoplasty to achieve the outcome they originally envisioned. Dr. Armen Vartany is a double board-certified plastic surgeon and a trusted expert in all types of rhinoplasty procedures. He routinely performs revision rhinoplasty to help people from Burbank, Los Angeles, and surrounding areas correct a “botched” nose job by another surgeon, restoring balance and harmony to the patient’s face.

Why Choose Dr. Vartany for Revision Rhinoplasty in Los Angeles?

A second rhinoplasty is typically more complex than the initial procedure. The surgeon may need to navigate excess scar tissue, rebuild the nasal structure, use cartilage grafts, and address other complications from the initial surgery. These techniques require a high degree of surgical training and expertise.

A renowned rhinoplasty specialist, Dr. Vartany performs about 200 rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty procedures annually and has completed more than 3,000 rhinoplasty procedures throughout his career. Men and women from around the world seek out Dr. Vartany for rhinoplasty revision surgery, drawn to his warm, approachable bedside manner and his exceptional precision and skill while utilizing the most advanced surgical techniques.

How Much Does Revision Rhinoplasty Cost in Los Angeles?

At our Burbank practice, rhinoplasty starts at about $12,800. The cost of revision rhinoplasty varies according to the amount of correction necessary, the complexity of your surgery, and several other individual factors. We provide you with a detailed price quote following your consultation with Dr. Vartany.

Our practice also partners with flexible financing organizations to help make paying for your plastic surgery procedure more affordable. Remember that cost alone should not be the deciding factor when choosing a plastic surgeon to perform your revision rhinoplasty. Selecting a surgeon with demonstrated experience in this complex and highly technical procedure is essential.

Common Reasons for Revision Rhinoplasty

Patients may seek revision rhinoplasty to address concerns that are either aesthetic, functional, or both. Perhaps your original surgeon did not deliver the dream nose you envisioned, or you experienced complications while healing. Although reasons for revision rhinoplasty vary, here are some common concerns that bring patients to Dr. Vartany for a nasal “re-do:”

  • Asymmetry: Sometimes, postoperative scarring contributes to nasal asymmetry or a crooked nose following a prior rhinoplasty.
  • Pinched, droopy, or bulbous nasal tip: If too much tip cartilage was initially removed, the nose may require cartilage revision, and the nostrils may need to be reshaped.
  • Bump: Revision may be required to smooth out post-op bumps or a dorsal hump.
  • Scar tissue: After surgery, excessive scar tissue that forms during healing may impact your nose’s appearance or function.
  • Breathing issues: The removal of too much cartilage can cause the sides of the nose to collapse, limiting airflow through your nostrils and compromising breathing.

Your Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure: What To Expect

Revision rhinoplasty requires a tremendous amount of technical precision and skill. It is typically performed under general anesthesia and may take up to 5 hours, depending on the concerns being addressed. While a closed technique is preferred for traditional rhinoplasty surgery, an “open approach” is often required during revision rhinoplasty to give Dr. Vartany better visibility and access to the nasal tissue and structure.

While every procedure varies with the patient’s unique needs, most revision rhinoplasties involve a small incision in the columella between the nostrils and additional incisions inside the base of the nostrils to carefully separate cartilage and bone. Dr. Vartany then reshapes the nose using cartilage grafts or other advanced techniques. Once the underlying nasal structure is revised, the skin is meticulously re-draped, and the nasal tip is adjusted and aligned.

Your Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery

Revision rhinoplasty recovery varies based on the unique factors of each surgery. However, patients can generally expect to experience the following during their recovery:

Swelling and bruising: This is common, especially during the first few weeks of healing. Keep your head elevated and use lightweight cold compresses on your forehead, eyes, and cheeks to discourage swelling. Swelling and bruising gradually subsides over 3 to 4 months.

Surgical splint and dressings: You will likely be required to wear a splint and bandages for about 1 week post-op to support the nasal structure during healing.

Downtime: Most patients should set aside a few days devoted exclusively to rest but can usually return to work or school in roughly 1 to 3 weeks. Resuming light exercise and other non-strenuous activities is generally OK after approximately 2 to 4 weeks.

Extra nasal precautions: It’s essential to avoid circumstances that can jeopardize your results during healing. Avoid blowing your nose, refrain from wearing glasses when possible, and protect your nose from being jostled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a good candidate for revision rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates for revision rhinoplasty are typically unhappy with the appearance or function of their nose after having a prior rhinoplasty but are otherwise in good overall health. It’s essential to share details about your previous surgery with Dr. Vartany and to have realistic expectations about what we can accomplish during revision rhinoplasty. We will explore and address these factors with you during your initial consultation.

When can I expect to see my revision rhinoplasty results?

Your results should become more noticeable within 3 to 4 months after surgery once most swelling subsides. However, it can take 6 to 12 months for your final results to be visible. The good news is that your results should be permanent once you’ve completely healed.

Does revision rhinoplasty leave scars?

If it’s possible to use a closed technique, there will be no visible scarring. When the open method is used during revision rhinoplasty, Dr. Vartany uses a tiny incision under the nose, typically resulting in a well-concealed scar that fades over time. Of course, every effort is made to reduce scarring and produce optimal results.
