How to Choose a Breast Implant?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

After making the decision to undergo breast implant surgery, the next important step is choosing the right breast implant size for you. Here are some objective ways to evaluate your options and make the right decision for your breast implant size.

Body shape and size

Body shape and size plays a big role in choosing an implant size. If you are short and petite, then you don’t need huge breast implants since it will not take much to give you a very attractive and full bust. If you’re tall and have a large frame, however, then it will take more to fill out your chest, in which case you can probably opt for larger breast implants.

Lifestyle

The kind of lifestyle you follow should also impact your decision. If you’re an athletic woman, a smaller size might be ideal since breast implants will add some weight to your body and might limit your physical activities. If you are a woman with a small frame, large breasts can pull on your neck and back muscles, causing pain and discomfort.

Aesthetic preferences

Your aesthetic preferences will be one of the primary deciding factors in choosing a breast implant size. Your breast surgeon may show you some photos of topless women in magazines and ask you to choose the look you find most attractive. This will help you and your surgeon to better understand your aesthetic preferences. It is possible that you might find out that the breast type you find attractive is not the one you initially thought you wanted.

It will also be helpful to ask your surgeon to show you the before and after photos of former breast augmentation patients who have similar body types to yours.

Implant shape and placement

Breast implant shape is also an important factor to consider. There are many implant shapes available in the market, such as round or teardrop. Though some surgeons believe that the teardrop implants create a more natural shape, the round ones are the most popular among women.

What Bras you Should Wear after Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

If a woman is unhappy with the shape and size of her breasts, it can hurt her self esteem and even impact her career and life. Today’s plastic surgery techniques make it possible for every woman to obtain the breast shape and size she wants.

Nowadays, breast augmentation surgery offers wide options to those who are eager to get “new breasts”. Women can choose to have firm or soft, teardrop-shaped or melon-like breasts.  Breast surgeries can both enhance and also lift breasts. The choice depends on your preference, though sometimes women prefer to have both procedures.

Post-surgical care is important regardless of the type of breast augmentation surgery. Here are some tips on what type of bra you should buy after your breast augmentation surgery.

Buy a soft bra with no underwire to wear during the post-surgical recovery period. A sports bra is ideal after surgery. Your breasts will swell after the procedure, so you will need a larger bra than your real size requires. Since most breast augmentation surgeons do not measure breasts in terms of cup sizes, they will generally be unable to determine in advance what size bra you will need.

In some cases, your doctor might recommend a compression bra that will be pressed on the surface of the skin, thereby reducing the physical volume of the breast and the surrounding area.

Underwire bras should be avoided until your breasts have completely healed.

After the swelling has gone and your breasts are completely healed, you will need a professional bra fitting to determine your new bra size. Most lingerie stores offer free bra measurements. Bra shopping after breast surgery is really an exciting time. Try on different styles of bras and don’t be afraid to experiment!

Breast Augmentation Cost

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the price for breast implants differs depending on the implant type. The average fees for saline implants fluctuate from $3300 to $3500, and for silicone implants from $4000-$4100.

However, the actual breast augmentation surgery cost and implant prices are not represented by these figures, since the fees highly vary from region to region.

Although the average cost for breast augmentation surgery is between $3,000 and 4,000, the full amount that the patient could pay is much higher. This figure includes only the cost of the breast implants, but there are other fees as well; these includes the anesthesia, medical facility fee, prescriptions, medical testing, surgical garments, or any other charges for pre- and post-surgical care. It is also important to keep in mind that not only do surgical fees fluctuate from region to region, but also from practice to practice. Surgical facilities, cosmetic surgeons, and anesthesiologists will probably charge more for their services in larger cities. Overall, understand that every breast enhancement procedure is unique and there are a variety of factors that will influence the cost, ranging from the type of implant to the way it is placed and the level of surgical complexity.

If you are considering breast augmentation, first ask your breast surgeon what fees will be covered. Although the cost of breast augmentation is not and should not be the decisive factor in choosing a cosmetic surgeon, it is important to be aware of the procedure cost to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Generally, insurance companies do not cover the breast implant costs or any other prices associated with the surgery. An exception is made when the breast augmentation surgery is part of a breast reconstruction procedure, e.g. as a result of mastectomy or breast trauma. Furthermore, many insurance companies will not even cover surgery or treatment costs for complications that are related to breast implants.

Now that you understand some of the various factors affecting the price of your surgery, you can look into this option as a more informed individual. Again, though price should not be a defining factor in your decision, it is important to understand what to expect financially. Breast Augmentation Surgery: Prepare Your Home

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Having surgery for a breast augmentation may be a life changing event. Before undergoing it, read these pre-surgery preparation tips concerning your home rearrangements, to help make life more comfortable when you return home.

•    When leaving for surgery, make sure your home is clean and all your laundry is done.

•    Anything that you have to reach up for must be put on a countertop or table, as it will be uncomfortable to reach up until about a week after surgery.

•    Make sure your home is well-stocked with food. Remember that you will be taking small, frequent meals. No spicy or fried foods! Cooking and freezing meals for microwaving is also a good idea since frozen meals are low in sodium.

•    Mostly prepare foods that are light on the stomach, such as soup, crackers, applesauce, oatmeal, jello, cottage cheese, yogurt and pudding.

•    Prepare loosely-fitting comfortable shirts that open in the front. Sweat pants, pajama bottoms and other pull-on pants work well.

•    Have a couple of cotton sports bras without underwire, they will provide support and comfort for the first few weeks after surgery.

•    Make sure you have plenty of pillows on your bed to keep your upper body elevated for a few days after your breast surgery to help your breast implants stay in right position during the initial healing process.

•    Ensure that you have a list of phone numbers you may need to call. Include your doctor’s daytime and after-hours numbers.

•    Make sure you have books, magazines, the TV remote control, a CD player with your favorite CDs, video games or everything else that may keep you interested.

•    Set up a nightstand with a phone, your list of numbers, a thermometer, light snacks, water and something to read.
•    Prepare ice packs to reduce post-surgery swelling.

•    Make sure you have a microwaveable pack. Heat is effective for treating back pain caused by sleeping with your upper body propped up.

•    Since your nipples are very sensitive after surgery, make sure you have some topical anesthetic cream or numbing cream.

•    Prepare a supply of wetnaps or baby wipes, moisturizer and hand lotion.

•    Drink plenty of water and make sure you have a mild laxative in case of constipation, which may occur as a result of taking pain medications after the breast surgery.

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants

Friday, August 20th, 2010

A small or flat chest may affect a woman’s self confidence and put certain limitations on what she can and cannot wear. Fortunately, there have been many breakthroughs in the field of cosmetic surgery, and breast augmentation is both safe and available to many women today.
There are two types of implants are used for breast augmentation surgery: saline implants and silicone implants. In this blog, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both.
What is saline?
Saline solution is a solution of sodium chloride in sterile water. A saline-filled breast implant consists of a silicone shell that is filled with sterile saline to the required volume during the surgery.
What is silicone?
Silicone is derived from a semi-metallic or metal-like element that in nature combines with oxygen to form silicon dioxide or silica. If silica is heated with carbon at high temperature, silicon can be produced. Further processing will convert the silicon into a long chemical chain, or polymer, called silicone. It may be a liquid, gel or rubbery substance.

Advantages of Silicone Implants
•    Softer, more natural feel
•    Less visible rippling
•    Recommended for patients with thin skin
•    They can be teardrop or round shaped
Disadvantages of Silicone Implants
•    Come pre-filled, which means incisions have to be larger.
•    Leaks may be found in secondary tissue.
•    Expensive
Advantages of Saline Implants
•    Saline implants are inserted empty and therefore a smaller incision is made.
•    Less expensive
•    Available to women 18 years and older

Disadvantages of Saline Implants
•    Do not look and feel as natural as silicone implants.
•    When a saline implant deflates, you will have extremely asymmetric breasts until surgery is performed to replace the implant.

Breast Augmentation: Is It Expensive?

Friday, August 6th, 2010

The cost of breast augmentation surgery is widely varied, ranging from $6,000 to $15,000, plus the consultation fee that is paid beforehand to decide whether or not one is eligible for it.  The overall cost of the surgery involves the following fees.

The surgeon’s fee

The more skilled is the surgeon, the more this cost will be. A board certified, qualified and experienced surgeon will usually require from $2000 to $5000 for his/her services. The price that the surgeon will require also depends on the type of the surgery the patient needs. Always remember to make sure that the surgeon is board certified with all necessary documents. Try to find out how many successful breast surgeries he/she has done in the past.

The implant price

There are typically two types of widely used implants: silicone implants and saline implants. Unlike silicone, which is a gel, saline implant is a liquid substance. The average implant price is around $1000 to $2000, with a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. During this period, the patient should regularly checked by his/her cosmetic surgeon for any damage to the implants.

The anesthesia fee

The anesthesia cost will depend on the type of anesthesia needed, ranging from $850 to $1100. The type of anesthesia depends on the facility where it is being performed, the patient’s general health and the surgeon’s preferences.

Other indirect fees include:

•    Medical facility fees
•    Hospitalization fees in some cases
•    Fees for medications used during admission
•    Pre-operative testing fees

Breast Augmentation: When Can You Drive Again?

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Over a half million women around the world undergo breast augmentation each year. The techniques and technologies used in the breast implant surgery have greatly improved over the last decade. Due to this, success rates for this type of surgery are very high today, while complications are minimal.

Recovery after breast augmentation surgery requires lots of rest and relaxation. For the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery, it will be important to have someone reliable who would take to care of you. (This includes driving you home from the hospital).

One of the most noticeable things that women experience during the recovery period after breast augmentation surgery is frequent mood swings, ranging dissatisfaction or regret to total elation.

For physical healing, breast implant surgery normally requires at least a few weeks. Common symptoms during recovery include tightness and redness of the skin, pain, sensitivity of the nipples, numbness and discomfort around the incisions.

Many women are concerned about how long after breast augmentation surgery until they can drive. Here are 3 points to keep in mind.

1. Your wounds are in a delicate state so you should definitely have someone drive you home from the hospital after your surgery. During this period, your wounds are vulnerable to jarring movements of any sort since they have been recently stitched.

2. You should avoid any exercises for at least 2 weeks. This includes running, swimming, jogging, having sex, picking up toddlers and finally driving.

3. You may be able to drive within 2-4 weeks after surgery. To learn exactly when you can start driving, consult with your plastic surgeon. In most cases, women can start driving again within 2-4 weeks after surgery.

Recovery after breast augmentation surgery is not very painful or complicated, it just requires time and patience. Just be ready for the gradual healing process to take its course and avoid driving for at least 2 weeks after breast augmentation surgery.

Is a Nose Job Permanent and Does It Result in Permanent Scars?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Unlike breast augmentation, face lift and many other cosmetic surgeries, rhinoplasty lasts forever, since once removed, bone or cartridge will never regrow.

If a nose job is carried out properly, the results should not deteriorate over time. However, in case of a poor rhinoplasty procedure, nostrils may begin to pinch or scar tissue can form.

Though nose surgery results are permanent, the aging process will have an effect on the appearance of your nose as your face changes, but the overall reshaping and new nasal structure should remain the same. Though nose reshaping surgery is permanent, many people prefer revisiting their surgeon to keep track of the progress of their nose. In such cases if they feel any changes do need to be made, they are able to consult their Los Angeles rhinoplasty surgeon and discuss their options.

Despite the permanence of rhinoplasty results, you may want to reshape your nose again as your face matures and is reshaped with age or you may simply want to touch up your surgery after the initial rhinoplasty. If you wish to do this, then you should undergo revision rhinoplasty. This procedure can be ideal for enhancing or revising the poor aspects of your initial rhinoplasty.

Scaring after rhinoplasty

Some slight and almost unnoticeable scarring is inevitable after rhinoplasty. The extant of scaring depends on the type of nose surgery: a closed rhinoplasty surgery creates scars only on the inside of the nose, whereas an open rhinoplasty which may be necessary for more extensive reshaping, creates only one external scar at the base of the columella. This scar fades over time, becoming nearly impossible for others to detect.
