Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery and Cost

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Revision rhinoplasty recovery is similar to that of primary rhinoplasty. Nasal packing will help to reduce swelling and bleeding after the surgery, but you will be unable to breathe through your nose until the packing is finally removed.
Your surgeon may prescribe painkillers that help to relieve the post-operation pain. Feeling nauseated after the nose surgery is quite normal. So if you have had this problem, alert your surgeon and the anesthesiologist so that you can receive anti-nausea drugs in advance.

There may be some bleeding during the first few days. Applying a cold compress to your forehead will help to reduce swelling. It is also recommended to elevate your head for the first week after the surgery and to avoid any trauma to the nose area during the first eight weeks after your plastic surgery. You should avoid blowing your nose for two to three weeks after any type of rhinoplasty. However, your airway should be clear as soon as the packs are removed, and the need for nose-blowing which is common when the airway is obstructed should diminish after your surgery.

Your surgeon will likely ask you to return in three to seven days so that the stitches and the cast can be removed. Your nose will still be swollen, but after two weeks much of the swelling will have gone.

Revision rhinoplasty costs more than primary rhinoplasty. Any part of the fee that is directly related to correcting airway problems may be covered by your health insurance. Any costs associated with cosmetic changes must be covered by you. If the rhinoplasty cost is too high and you cannot afford it, ask your surgeon about monthly payments.

Rhinoplasty: A Nose Like That of a Celebrity?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Celebrities are everywhere and the desire to look as good as them may be incredibly powerful. The trend of getting cosmetic surgery to replicate the looks of celebrities is becoming increasingly popular. People want to get cosmetic surgery not to simply attain something like that of a celebrity, but to get an exact copy of it.

Rhinoplasty is among the first cosmetic surgery procedures that people choose to undergo to look like a celebrity. Some people think that this tendency is harmless, while others criticize it severely.

The pros to getting “a celebrity nose” are that the patient may increase their self-esteem and confidence. However, there are also a number of cons. People are inclined to forget that a celebrity’s nose may not look good on their face. Additionally, the rhinoplasty procedure is a complex one since it is not something that can be put in or taken out (such as an implant), so there is a chance you won’t be happy with your new nose. Twenty percent of nose surgeries need revision for one reason or another. In order to do so, you have to wait a full year to get a revision rhinoplasty and need an experienced plastic surgeon to complete it.

As we have discussed in our previous blogs, a good rhinoplasty candidate is one that has an out of proportion nose, is in good health, is emotionally stable and has realistic expectations. People who want to get a celebrity nose job are not ideal candidates because it might not be realistic to achieve a celebrity’s look.

So if there is a celebrity nose that you love and want your nose to replicate it, it would be a good idea to talk with a doctor who is board certified and experienced.  He/she can help you determine if rhinoplasty is for you and may use the celebrity nose you admire as a model for your new nose.

What You Should Know About Rhinoplasty

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Since the nose is the most defining feature on the face, even a slight change may greatly improve one’s appearance. That’s the reason more and more people consult a plastic surgeon to undergo an operation called a rhinoplasty or nose surgery to improve the appearance of their nose.

During the consultation your nose will be thoroughly examined, taking into consideration your ethnicity, age, skin type, degree of deformity, function of the nasal structures as well as other factors. After this, Dr. Vartany will probably take photographs of your nose at different angles and will talk to you about your expectations to make sure that they are realistic. He will also suggest the shape of nose that will enhance your aesthetic balance. Dr. Vartany will show you photos of other rhinoplasty patients with similar nose shapes, and use computer imaging to help you better imagine how your nose will look after rhinoplasty.

The rhinoplasty procedure involves anesthesia, incision, reshaping and incision closing. Type of anesthesia depends on the type of rhinoplasty. Primary and secondary rhinoplasty require general anesthesia, whereas filler rhinoplasty requires just local anesthesia. As soon as anesthesia has been induced, closed or open incisions are performed. The soft tissues covering the nose are raised through these incisions providing an access to reshape the structure of the nose. The rhinoplasty procedure is over as soon as the nose is sculpted and the incisions are closed.

Every patient should realize that complete results cannot be seen immediately after the surgery. They should not feel anxious when seeing their new swollen nose. Most of swelling will go down by one month but final results may take up to one year to be fully evident. For these reasons, you should wait at least one year before undergoing revision rhinoplasty.

Revision Rhinoplasty: Should You Do It or Not?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Revision rhinoplasty, also known as secondary rhinoplasty, is a nose operation performed to correct or revise an unsatisfactory outcome from a previous rhinoplasty.  Rhinoplasty is a difficult and complex procedure that may results in dissatisfaction if not performed skillfully.  Further testament to the high rate of dissatisfaction amongst rhinoplasty patients is the number of people who choose to go back for a second rhinoplasty, often times to repair inaccuracies from the first surgery or for further improvements

Still, deciding to go in for a second rhinoplasty is not something that should be taken lightly.  If you are seriously considering a revision rhinoplasty, make sure that you have had enough time for healing and adjusting to your new appearance. An honest and skilled surgeon will refuse to operate on most cases (unless in case of an emergency) until the nose has had at least nine to twelve months to heal.  Some plastic surgeons prefer to wait even longer than that. The reason is that recovery from rhinoplasty is a slow process. There is still a significant amount of swelling six months after surgery, and the nose continues to settle for up to a year or more. Many people are initially shocked by their new nose and appearance because you have altered a very prominent and defining feature that takes time to get use to.  It is normal for patients to go through a range of emotions as part of the healing process, which is why careful time and consideration should be given to any thought of revision surgery.

If you still decide that a revision is necessary, you’ll need to take some time to reevaluate your expectations and goals as well as consulting your initial surgeon to see what advice or recommendations he/she can give.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when considering a revision rhinoplasty:

  • What are my expectations for the revision rhinoplasty?
  • Did the surgeon fail to perform what was promised?
  • Do I want the same surgeon to perform my revision rhinoplasty?
  • Was there an unexpected complication during the surgery that prevented the desired results?

Remember that there are various reasons why your rhinoplasty may not have turned out the way you had envisioned it; which is why it is important to take your time in considering a revision rhinoplasty.  A good first resource for your concerns should be your plastic surgeon.

Some patients will be offered a revision by their primary surgeon.  Naturally the choice is completely yours whether you would feel comfortable with your surgeon performing a revision rhinoplasty, or if you wish to seek out a different plastic surgeon.  If you do choose to consult with a different plastic surgeon, you should take time and do your research and seek out a surgeon that you can trust and feel comfortable with to communicate your dissatisfaction and go forward towards getting the results you are looking for.
